2B/OF Ryan Raburn had the Spring Training of his life, batting over .400 for a stretch, eventually cooling a bit to a .268 average. However, he still slugged .661, having hit 6 HRs, 2 2Bs and a 3B. That accounts for nine of his 15 hits in the spring.

Second basemen Ryan Raburn and Ramon Santiago can play multiple positions, as well. On any given day, no matter who is resting, we'd have the necessary coverage, with four position players on the bench. As it is, with 12 pitchers on the roster, a team only ever has five position players on the bench.

Thames is a good backup outfielder who deserves more games than the 103 he played last year.

Ryan Raburn – I remember the game on July 25, 2007 where he knocked in seven RBIs. That alone probably earned him the spot to being a backup right fielder. If Ordonez is traded or injured, he will probably be seeing more games. I wouldn’t expect repeat performances of July 25, 2007. In fact, I do remember that error he made in 2008 when he threw the ball way far away from home plate against the White Sox that constituted them to tie the game up (we later won at the bottom of the 9th when we had the bases loaded and they threw a ball four). Everyone makes mistakes, though. Raburn may need to stay ‘part-time’ with the Tigers and play some games in Toledo before he can get the hang of things.

ould use some help in the outfield, where starter Marcus Thames is hurt, and newbies Matt Joyce and Ryan Raburn are sharing time in left.

But knowing that they're pretty much out of the playoff hunt meant Detroit wasn't desperate for Raul's services, and the fact that Seattle was dealing from a position of strength meant they couldn't press the issue too far. Seattle, after all, will still get compensatory draft picks if Raul leaves as a free agent, and if Detroit's offer didn't match that perceived value, they could (and did) stand pat.
